What Did Rumsfeld Not Know And When Did He Not Know It?

"As we know, there are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don't know we don't know." - Donald Rumsfeld, February 12, 2002, Department of Defense news briefing

"Did we know that Arabs would be turning planes into missiles? What if we just didn't know we didn't know they would even though we knew we didn't know we didn't know that, meaning we damn well knew.

"There are so many things we didn't know. Did we know the Twin Towers would be standing on September 11? Who knew that? Who knew on September 10 that they would be standing on September 11? Who knew that they wouldn't be standing? Did I know I would be standing? There are things we don't know we don't know.

"We as an Administration are getting sick and tired of knowing anything about what anyone thinks they know about anything we know. We know that Scott McClellan is no longer White House Press Secretary. Did we know he would know he wouldn't be at that job after knowing what he didn't know about us or what he knew he knew about us?

"Now it comes out we knew Saddam didn't have weapons of mass destruction. What is knowledge about not having weapons of mass destruction anyway? Knowing we knew about it? Or dealing with the unknown about knowing we knew about?

"Look it, we're in a time of war, right? How were we supposed to know we were going to be in a time of war in 2003, even if we planned it in 2000? Or is that the kind of thing we blindly accept because we need to cope with this world of painful knowns, unknowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns. 2000, 2003, 2006 " do I look like Copernicus?

"The point is, the Florida National Guard was called up in the state of Florida on September 7, 2001 in order to help handle "civil disturbance' and "acts of terrorism.' Could we have known Arabs were going to be turning planes into missiles and destroying the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on 9/11 when September 7 comes four days before it? Now you really are getting into knowing knowns about known knowns ... check that, I mean unknown unknowns."
