Bush and Koizumi Make Complete Elvises of Themselves
MEMPHIS, Tennessee The world may be going to hell in a hand-basket but that didn’t stop Japan’s Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and U.S. President George W. Bush from making a pilgrimage to Memphis. "Prime Minister Koizumi likes Elvis, he's made no secret of that," said White House press secretary Tony Snow. "This has nothing to do with anything, so they're doing it."
Having “nothing to do with anything,” and other such comments usually reserved for Bush’s press conferences, was the rule of the day as the President entertained his Japanese guest with the best America has to offer – sad as that may be.
Much to the chagrin of the Secret Service, the Prime Minister of Japan, who has fantasies that he is the King of Rock and Roll, and George W. Bush, who has fantasies that he’s the King of the United States, sang several Elvis tunes for the small crowd of VIPs on hand at Elvis’s Graceland estate. “Burnin’ Love” seemed to be the crowd’s favorite, but “Welcome to My World” came a close second – especially when sung in Koisumi’s thick Japanese accent.
Although the estate was closed to the public during the visit, or perhaps because it was closed, the President used the occasion to relax and let it be known what many have suspected for some time: he’s drinking again – and quite a lot.
When asked – given his party’s recent push to protect the U S flag – why he wore one as a necktie, the President replied, “Wahdehfuk? Wahdehfuk yall tawkinbout? Ohyeh. Sh*t, I plumfergot bout that – hey I – yallwannaseemah new tattoo?”
