House Dems Vote to Bring Troops Home Sometime, in a Nonbinding Way
Pelosi, a hand puppet, a black guy and Murtha explain the new bill WASHINGTON House Democrats celebrated the passage of a nonbinding resolution to bring the troops home from Iraq sometime.
"The American people can see how we are stepping up to lead on the conduct of the war," said House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.
The bill increases funding for the war but would require the President, in a nonbinding way, to withdraw an unspecified number of troops within four months, and most of the troops eventually.
“One or two coming home in the next four months would suffice,” said Pelosi. “How’s that for sticking it to him!”
The 218-212 vote, mostly along party lines, was a hard-fought victory for Democrats, who faced divisions within their own ranks on the rancorous issue.
President Bush praised the action of the Democrats. “Gosh darn!” he said. “I’m so humbled! I’m gonna follow Ms. Pelosi’s lead.”
"We're going to make a difference with this bill," said John Murtha, the Vietnam War vet who helped write the legislation. "We're going to start changing the direction of this great nation … and weaken it," he said to a standing ovation and hugs from his colleagues.
