OutKast Performance at Grammy's Called Racist by Native Americans
"... don't want to meet your daddy ... just want you in my Caddy ..."
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico The Native American Cultural Center called rap group OutKast's performance at the Grammy's "racist" and called for a boycott of OutKast, CBS, Arista Records, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the Internal Revenue Service.
"They are trying to commercialize Native American culture," said a spokes-squaw for the Center as she sold Navajo rugs, sand paintings, jewelry and beaded belts at a trading post on the Navajo reservation.
"We were initially happy when we heard the chant that opened OutKast's performance. We thought we were about to hear an American Indian group perform. We recognized the chant as coming from a Navajo song, but then they broke into their own song, Hey Ya!, which is nothing like an Indian song."
Would it have been more racist if the song had sounded like a Navajo song or if it hadn't, asked our reporter?
The squaw thought for a while and replied, "Either way! Not only that, OutKast disrespected Native Americans by wearing feathers."
The members of OutKast were unfazed by the criticism. "Yea, ya know, we had featherz on our headz like dem dogz do," said Andre ("Dre") Benjamin. "We also had tomahawks and teepeez, like all dem foolz do."
"We wore green 'cos ind'ns' love da money dey get from duty-free cigarettes and casinos," said Antwan ("Big Boi") Patton. "As for the half naked chicks … yea!"
US Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, was at the Grammy's and apparently didn't notice anything wrong with the group's performance. She applauded OutKast and told reporters that "George Bush would love this authentic indigenous American singing and dancing."
Meanwhile, the NAACP has come out in protest against Eminem for "ripping off black culture." It has called for a boycott of Eminem, all major networks and award shows, and all white group CDs. A spokes-boy for the NAACP said that Eminem also disrespected blacks by wearing baggy pants. "They is da pants we wear in the pen," he said.
The Klu Klux Klan got into the act by denouncing Nat King Cole for singing white man's songs. "How dare he disrespect our culture by sing white man's songs, and how dare he wear a suit, which is white man's clothing," said a spokes-hoodedman.
"We are very sorry if anyone was offended," said a CBS spokeswoman, "but, hey, if it's good for the ratings, we don't give a flying f**k."
