O'Neill Says There Is Poverty In Asia
NEW DELHI Wrapping up a tour of South Asia, charismatic US Treasury Secretary, Paul O'Neill, told reporters that he was struck by how many poor people there were in the region.
O'Neill had toured India, Pakistan and war-ravaged Afghanistan.
"Bono had told me all about this," he added, "but I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes."
"There is acute poverty here," he said. "Many people are in rags and are jobless. They have no hope. They exist on a dollar a day."
"And that's the way it should be," said O'Neill. "They're not getting a dime from the US. Let them go and get jobs instead of sitting on their fat asses all day. In fact, I could use a couple of housekeepers if all they want is a dollar a day."
