French Want to Ban the Word "email"
PARIS The French Culture Ministry has announced a ban on the use of "email" in all government ministries, documents, publications or web sites, the latest step to stem an incursion of English words into the French language.
The guardians of French language and culture have been waging a losing battle to keep foreign words, especially English words, from entering the French language. Nothing is worse to their ears than English words adopted into French, known as "Franglais."
Their latest effort is to replace the imported English word, "email," with a new, invented French word, "courriel," a shortening of "courrier electronique," which translates as electronic mail.
Meanwhile, the Italians want to change the Italian phrase for "German government minister" to "Nazi," a traditional word, and the Germans want to ban the German phrase for "Italian vacation".
