Forget the Birther Issue; Is Obama a Sunni or a Shiite?
WASHINGTON, D.C., 2011-05-22 After President Obama’s abandoned Israel in a foreign policy speech this week, Middle East experts have begun to debate whether he is a Sunni or a Shiite.
“He is finally letting his Muslim roots come out,” said Eliot Abrams, a senior fellow for Middle East studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C. “so the questions is whether he is a Sunni or a Shiite.
“We don’t know whether his father was a Sunni or a Shiite. We also don’t know which sect the madras he attended in Indonesia was affiliated with. It’s an important question. Did his hippy mother choose a Sunni or a Shiite madras?”
Dr. Avi Shlaim of the Oxford University’s East Centre said that the clues offered by Obama’s support or opposition to various Middle Eastern regimes were mixed.
“He has opposed regimes that are Sunni as well as those who are Shiite, and has pretty well offended everyone in the Middle East with that speech,” he said. “So I suspect he is a Shiite.”
Donald Trump said it was important for President Obama to be honest and to tell the American people the truth as to whether he was a Sunni or a Shiite.
“I got him to release his birth certificate and I am once again doing a great public service for the American people,” he said. “So watch me on Celebrity Apprentice, its my only source of income now!”
